A Connoisseur's Guide to Buying Diamonds

A Connoisseur's Guide to Buying Diamonds

Understanding the 4Cs is just the beginning. Our master craftsmen share insider knowledge on choosing diamonds that truly sparkle.

The 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal language of diamonds, but mastering them is only the beginning of understanding what makes a stone truly extraordinary.

Cut is Everything

Of all the Cs, cut has the greatest influence on a diamond's brilliance. A well-cut stone will outshine a heavier but poorly-cut one every single time. Look for excellent or very good cut grades.

Colour and Clarity

For most settings, a colour grade of G–H is indistinguishable from colourless to the naked eye — and significantly more affordable. Similarly, VS2 clarity is eye-clean in most stones above 0.50 carats.

Buy the best cut you can afford, then balance colour and clarity to suit your remaining budget.
  • Always ask for a GIA or IGI certificate
  • View the stone in natural daylight, not just showroom lighting
  • Choose a setting that complements the stone's proportions
